A timeless meal with endless ways to customise your plate to your liking. Whether you reach for extra Yorkshire puddings or opt for a further serving of gravy, there’s no denying that a roast dinner will always satisfy your cravings.

To roast or not to roast?

The British love affair with the traditional Sunday Roast is long standing – it’s believed to have been ongoing since the 15th century! At Lion, we’ve decided to celebrate all things roast dinner and delve deeper into what makes a great Sunday roast. After surveying 300 diners, we found out exactly what the nation rates on their roasts.

According to our survey results, over a third of diners (39%) have a roast monthly, while those having them weekly (23%) and every six months (23%) coming up next. Chicken reigns victorious as the most popular choice of meat overall (29%), it was closely followed by beef (27%). Our surveyed diners also went for the veggie option – with 3% of diners enjoying a nut roast best of all.

Side Supremacy – Which side dishes rule victorious?

So – the good news is, many of us still enjoy our roast dinners! Our survey found that 23% of people include the dish in their weekly meal plan. Now the simple question has been answered, we dig deeper into the nitty gritty – side dishes.

Unsurprisingly, roasties came out on top, with a quarter of diners (24%) choosing this as their side of choice. The classic roasties were followed up by Yorkshire Puddings (16%), while carrots are the third most popular accompaniment (12%).

Why not consider introducing some new side dishes to your next roast dinner? Wow your guests with a side of Baked Camembert and Mango Chutney Yorkshire Puddings, or have a go at transforming your roast dinner into Roast Honey and Mustard Potatoes.

Enhance the flavour.

A roast dinner without gravy is like salt without pepper – they just go together! Our survey shows that 93% of people have gravy on their roast. Lion’s new range of tasty gravy granules – available in Onion and Gravy for Beef varieties – are suitable for veggies and have a great rich taste - providing the perfect finishing touch to roast dinners, bangers and mash and more.

Not only is it full of flavour, but the Lion Gravy range is great for convenience. All you need to do is add water – with just 72g of granules making enough gravy for 20 diners!

Condiments to compliment your roast

Condiments can make or break a dish. Some people can’t imagine having beef without horseradish, or gammon without mustard… but our survey showed that the nation’s top condiment to have with a roast dinner is mint sauce, with almost a third of diners (30%) enjoying this tangy condiment. Coming in second was horseradish (24%), followed by apple sauce in third place (18%).

Whatever condiments you choose to add to your roast, why not take a look at Lion’s range of condiments and mustards? As well as the nation’s favourite mint sauce, Lion offers mustards both fiery and tame, delicious creamy horseradish and fruity apple sauce. With Lion, there’s a condiment for every dish.
