Give your Mothers Day menus an international theme mothers day

Why not give Mother’s Day specials boards a global flavour with a nod to celebrations around the world?

While Mothering Sunday in the UK dates back to the 17th Century and takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, mums in other countries are celebrated in their own ways.

From Thailand to Australia, Italy to India, here’s our guide to Mother’s Day Around The World.

Italy: Festa Della Mamma

A relatively recent invention in Italy, the annual early summer festival for mums was begun by a parish priest and quickly spread throughout the country. Think lavish feasts of lasagne, creamy pasta, baked fish and grilled meats, followed by tiramisu and baked cheesecake.

Thailand: Wan Mae

This August celebration honours Queen Sirikit, known as the Mother of Thailand, with fireworks, pageants and the displaying of portraits and shrines. Treat mums to favourites like Thai green curry, Tom yum and Pad Thai.

India: A blend of festivals

India’s maternal celebrations include both the western-style version, held in May, and the 10-day Hindu festival of Durga Puja, held in October to honour the goddess known as the Divine Mother. Bring out the Indian-inspired dishes, full of lean meats and fish, pulses and vegetables, and distinctive spice.

Australia: Mother’s Day

Chrysanthemums are presented to mothers on this annual festival held in May. Give menus an Aussie twist with grilled king prawns, chicken and beef, or create a snappy talking point with crocodile burgers!

Mexico: Dià de la Madre

The May festival for Mexican mums brings mariachi bands and breakfast tamales. For a lunchtime specials board, make it simple, spicy and delicious with fajitas, nachos, tacos and enchiladas.

All these dishes, and more, can be made with Whirl for simple way to add rich, buttery taste to any food. Take a look at more of our recipes here
