Ignite your taste buds – explore the wonderful world of Piri Piri with Lion’s hot sauces

Hot sauces are definitely having a moment. Supermarket Waitrose recorded a 55% jump in hot sauce sales in 2023, while there’s now hot sauce festivals and high-fashion hot sauces, and social media is also fuelling the trend – with TikTok shops selling hot sauces of all kinds.

Hot sauces are defined by the chillies they use, with different regions around the globe creating delicious sauces from their local varieties of chillies. Today, high demand for global flavours has seen all different kinds of hot sauces enter the UK market, but one of the most popular has been Piri Piri.

Piri Piri is believed to have been created by Portuguese explorers in Mozambique in the 15th century. After discovering the African bird's eye chilli pepper, they created a marinade with ingredients including garlic, red wine vinegar, paprika, and other European ingredients – from this, Piri Piri was made.

Since then, Piri Piri has been a popular choice of hot sauce to accompany different dishes, with the most popular recipe being grilled chicken. Global restaurant chain Nando’s have taken the Piri Piri market to new heights – with over 1,200 outlets in 30 countries.

With the hot sauce market projected to grow from $3.09 billion in 2023 to $5.09 billion by 2030, with a CARG increase of 7.42%, this trend is not cooling down anytime soon!
